National news: The death of Punjab and Haryana High Court lawyer Aqeel Akhtar (35), son of former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa and former cabinet minister Razia Sultana, at their Panchkula residence under suspicious circumstances has now taken a new turn.

The family initially attributed the death to a drug overdose, but a murder FIR has been filed at the MDC police station in Panchkula against former DGP Mohammad Mustafa, his wife (Congress leader and former minister Razia Sultana), and other family members, including his sister.

Mohammad Mustafa, former DGP of Punjab

Aqeel Akhtar's father, Mohammad Mustafa, was a 1985 batch IPS officer. He retired as DGP in 2021. He then decided to enter politics and joined the Congress party. He has also served as an advisor to Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu. In this case, a person named Shamsuddin submitted a complaint to the Panchkula Police Commissioner and a video of Aqeel Akhtar.

Based on this, the Panchkula MDC police station has now registered a case against Mohammad Mustafa, his wife, former minister Razia Sultana, daughter-in-law, and daughter under sections 103 (1) and 61 of the IPC.

Mustafa Family Booked For Murder

A case of murder and criminal conspiracy has been registered against the family. Mohammad Mustafa has been charged with the murder of Aqeel Akhtar and criminal conspiracy. He, along with his wife, daughter, and daughter-in-law, have also been charged with conspiracy.

Aqeel Akhtar died under suspicious circumstances at Mohammad Mustafa's home in Panchkula, Haryana, on October 16th. The family took the body to Sector 6 Civil Hospital in Panchkula, where the cause of death was determined to be a drug overdose.

Aqeel Video Triggers Murder Case

After conducting the post-mortem, the team of doctors preserved the viscera for examination and handed over Aqeel's body to his family. The family then went to their ancestral village in Saharanpur district, Uttar Pradesh, and buried the body.

A man named Shamsuddin Chaudhary filed a complaint with the Panchkula police and shared a video shot by Aqeel Akhtar on August 27th. Shamsuddin Chaudhary is a neighbor of Mohammad Mustafa and his family in Malerkotla, Punjab.

Aqeel Akhtar was held hostage at home

According to him, this entire matter is highly suspicious. The family has been involved in politics in Malerkotla, Punjab, for decades. However, after Aqeel Akhtar's death, instead of bringing his body to Malerkotla, his ancestral village in Saharanpur, where the family has not visited in years.

This is highly suspicious. Shamsuddin Chaudhary said that Aqeel Akhtar was held hostage at home. The allegations he has repeatedly made in his videos require investigation. For this reason, he has brought this matter to the attention of the Panchkula police.

16 minute 11 second video

A video of Aqeel Akhtar, son of the former Director General of Police (DGP), dated August 27th, has surfaced. In it, he claims that family members are plotting to kill him. He also mentions his father and wife's illicit relationship. Aqeel shared the video on his social media account on August 27th. In this 16-minute, 11-second video, Aqeel begins by saying, "Today is August 27th, 2025. I am shooting this video for my own records.

I discovered my father and wife's affair a year and a half ago. I should have known about it earlier. However, in 2018, a year after their marriage, I caught them near the dressing room, but he ran away."

I am under a lot of mental pressure

Aqeel further said in the video that after this he got me detained legally. I am under a lot of mental pressure. I feel that today they will file a false case again. They have already tried it once. In one case they filed a false FIR. At that time the SHO and the Commissioner had said not to file the FIR, it will not stand.

My mother and my sister were sitting in my dad's room and talking about making some arrangements for this. He is not able to do anything in Panchkula because the police here do not come under his control. He was saying that he will decide on this after winning the elections. He used to tell me that he will establish my character.

Serious Allegations Against Sister

In the video, Aqeel also made serious allegations against his sister. He said, "My sister left home and went with someone. She wanted to marry someone, even though her family was against it. My family didn't like her." He further stated, "I was studying law in Sonipat in 2012. Of course, I don't know what she's like.

I don't even know where she gets her money from." Aqeel further stated, "I was forcibly placed in a rehab center, even though I had already been to one. I was completely clean. I wasn't drunk, nor was I taken to a doctor. When I shared my feelings at the rehab center, my family found out and they took me out."

The inspector took me away

Two or three months later, in June, my family alleged that I had connections with gangsters while I was studying my book. An inspector came and picked me up. The Punjab police came and picked me up from Haryana. I had my bar exams. Aqeel further stated in the video that they used the Punjab state machinery to extort money from me. They said, "How can we give you such a large sum of money? You'll get drugged.

I never asked my family for any share, while in Malerkotla they're saying he's gone mad. They gave me psychotic drugs without even testing me." The video alleged that they called me a dog and pushed me. "I have videos of this," he added. They further alleged that they made derogatory comments about his sister. They threatened to file a rape case against him if he did anything.

Another 3 minute video

Meanwhile, another video of Aqeel Akhtar has surfaced. In this three-minute viral video, Aqeel Akhtar gives his family a clean chit. In the video, Aqeel Akhtar states that all the allegations he previously made against his family are baseless. He made these allegations when he was ill. In the video, Aqeel Akhtar mentions the care his family is providing him. He also describes his sister as a caring person.

DCP Srishti Gupta gave information

In this case, DCP Panchkula, Srishti Gupta, stated that on October 16th, Aqeel Akhtar, a resident of Sector 4 Mata Mansa Devi Complex, Panchkula, was found dead in his home. His family informed the police, and their statement was recorded.

The initial investigation revealed nothing suspicious, following which a postmortem was conducted and the body was handed over to the family for cremation. Later, some posts and videos surfaced on social media, purportedly made by the deceased before his death, in which he expressed personal conflicts and fears for his life.

SIT formed for investigation

On October 17, a complaint alleging death under suspicious circumstances was filed by Shamsuddin Chaudhary, a resident of Malerkotla, Punjab. Srishti Gupta stated that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed under the supervision of an ACP-rank officer to conduct a fair, transparent, and evidence-based investigation. The SIT will thoroughly investigate every aspect of the case. The investigation will be conducted impartially and with an open mind, ensuring that no one is spared and no innocent person is wronged.
